Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to common questions people have about starting therapy. If you are unable to find your answers here, please do not hesitate to contact me, and I will provide you with the information you need.

how do i know if i should begin therapy?

Anyone can benefit from psychotherapy. Therefore, if you are asking yourself whether or not to begin therapy, the answer is yes! You may decide to remain in therapy for only a short period of time in order to overcome a certain life hardship, or you may decide to stay in therapy for an extended period of time to manage more long-term concerns. Whatever it is that has led you to ask yourself if therapy is right for you, let me help you with it! You don't have to do it on your own. Oftentimes seeking help takes the most courage of all.

what is the cost of therapy?

I am in-network with BCBS making all in-network mental health benefits from these plans applicable. If you have a different type of insurance, you can pay for therapy out-of-pocket, and I can write you receipts for out-of-network reimbursement. It is important to obtain your benefit information prior to your first appointment; I can help you with this if needed. Paying for therapy without insurance is also an option, and the cost is $180/session. Sliding scale services are offered on a need basis as well.

How often will i attend therapy?

Most people attend therapy once a week. For more urgent concerns, twice a week may be appropriate.

how do i know what type of therapy i need?

You may be unsure what type of therapy you need, if any at all. That's okay. I will tell you what type of therapy is likely to be most helpful to you.

What will the first appointment be like?

During your first appointment, I will greet you and invite you to come into my office to fill out some initial paperwork. Then we will discuss what brought you to therapy, and I will collaborate with you to determine your therapy goals and how we will address them.

How long does therapy last?

The length of therapy depends completely on your presenting concerns and goals. Some people attend therapy for just a few months to address urgent concerns. Others remain in therapy for a lifetime as a form of emotional wellness. I will help you figure out what length is right for you.

can dr. neef prescribe medication?

I cannot prescribe medication, but I regularly consult with providers who can. Medication alone, without therapy, is rarely recommended as a treatment plan. When taking medication, it is important to also attend therapy in order to target deeper issues that contribute to symptoms. Therapy addresses underlying problems not fully explained by brain chemistry and is key to a long-term solution.
